When one sits on a wheelchair cushion it is always appropriate to keep in mind that the height of the cushion itself will change due to compression from body weight. Therefore, a 3" cushion is likely to compress to approximately 2" depending on the weight of the user. You want to ensure that you have enough height to accommodate such change so that the cushion does not bottom out. Most gel pads used in wheelchair cushions are manufactured so that the gel is in a single pouch. The problem with this is that when you sit on this type of cushion the gel migrates away from body pressure sites where you need it most. In order to provide pressure relief one most continuously knead the gel back into place...only to have it migrate again! This becomes an endless annoyance to the user/caregiver. To solve this problem we designed our unique four chamber gel pad. The gel stays where you need it to provide necessary pressure relief and no longer will kneading be required!
