SEFFNER FLORIDA IS.......
an unicorporated town in Hillsborough County. Once named Lenna City, the name was abandoned due to similarity to Leno, a town in western Florida. The town took the name of it's first postmaster, Fredrick P. Seffner.
At one point, after the South Florida Railway came through town in 1883,
it was expected that Seffner would flourish into a booming community much
like other Florida towns had grown. Instead, Seffner remained a quiet hamlet
only a few miles from Tampa and the Gulf Coast.
A sawmill, swelling orange groves and a public school were among Seffners
assets. Also big at the time was the Bowering Soap Manufacturing Company
where toilet soaps were produced.
The yellow fever epidemic of 1887-1888 drove hundreds of families from Tampa into the surround communities to escape the plague.During that time the Democratic County Convention (normally held in Tampa) was held in Seffner due to the threat of fever from the plague.
Today Seffner continues to grow as more and more housing communities are being built.
